Dixie Cup is invented in Boston.
1907
Originally the Health Kup, it is created by Lawrence Luellen in his office on State Street. The first version is a sanitary, flat-folded paper container that can be re-configured for use in a cold-water vending machine. The cup’s popularity increases as a result of the 1918 Flu epidemic. It assumes the Dixie Cup name after a line of dolls that are introduced in 1919, and increases in popularity again when it is first used to hold ice cream in 1923.
